Enabling the context of change
Children and young people can miss school for a variety of reasons, for some, the idea of attending can be difficult, even cause anxiety.
We apply a psychosocial approach to understand the combined influences and intersections that may have caused or contributed to pupil absence.
In collaboration with the child, young person and family, we listen, understand, and scope a plan for change.
Our work
- Meaningful support – providing support at the point of need, to children, young people and families.
- Active participation – helping children and young people become active participants in their achievements.
- Removing barriers – by providing whole family support and/or coordinating multi-agency support.
- Developing strategies – to improve attendance at individual, school and community levels.
- Facilitating change – helping to deliver change where change is needed (e.g. culture, processes, behaviours).
Our ideas
- Putting children and young people first – to ensure service and support is centred on their needs.
- Prevention by design – to prevent pupil absence and associated risks: educational underachievement, poor mental health and wellbeing, antisocial behaviour and crime.
Our themes
- Relevance – listening to the voices, needs and aspirations of children and young people and putting these at the heart of support.
- Developing capabilities – in children and young people to promote interest, agency and purpose for learning.
- Capacity – to develop understanding about the drivers behind pupil absence so that effective cross-cutting solutions can be achieved.
